I was never in the military, and found the author's memoir to be a very compelling read. I seriously enjoyed reading about how life is in actuality aboard these potentially "underwater coffins". He writes with extreme honesty on a "down to earth" level, that makes putting the book down difficult. I finished it fairly quickly and wished I had more. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND.Product details

an excellent read...very..very well written...
As a former boat sailor myself it’s always enjoyable reading accounts written by men who saw action in WWII diesel boats. Being a bit younger than the author, my time was largely in nukes, but I began in SS 385, an experience that made later duty on nukes appear luxurious in comparison.
We enjoy the old farts’ stories, but never feel we quite measure up to them as sub sailors.
